The many forms of RESISTANCE and the message your resistance has for you!
With change often comes a silent protest, what I call resistance. Resistance can take on many different forms. None of these forms are “good” or “bad”, it's more about you being self-aware so you can evaluate what is going on with you when resistance pops up. You certainly can’t do anything about a problem if you don’t know what the problem is. And sometimes resistance isn’t even a problem!!
The first form of resistance…Feeling like you are being FORCED to do something.
For example when my practice was mostly therapy clients, I worked with teenagers with audio and visual hallucinations. Even though their symptoms were uncomfortable and they were scared and confused, they came into my office with such resistance just because their parents were "forcing" them to attend therapy. It had nothing to do with the fact that they would indeed get better.
Again, we are not talking “good” or “bad” here. Sometimes it is helpful when someone pushes you to do something. It may be exactly what you need! Sometimes it’s not.
A second type of resistance comes from stepping outside of your comfort zone and doing something new. I love to use public speaking as an example because so many people get hung up on this. Most people are terrified of putting themselves in front of an audience. They will be resistant simply due to inexperience and the fear of the unknown.
The third type of resistance surfaces at the physical body level, especially when something unpleasant has happened in the past that you are now trying to repeat in the present. Back to the whole public speaking example…
Say you had a bad school-age experience with giving a presentation where the other kids made fun of you, and you were totally embarrassed. Your brain’s amygdala encoded this, and is going to sense danger from repeating this uncomfortable activity. When you now try to give a work related speech, it causes your body to enter a stress response (anxiety, tightness in chest, sweaty hands, etc.). This in turn, causes a strong desire to avoid public speaking.
And finally we have the soul level resistance. This is that protest that is a quiet whisper, but is the feeling, deep down, that something just doesn't feel right. Whatever choice you are contemplating would somehow go against your divine nature, and if you were to follow through with what ever it is, you would definitely regret it.
The soul level resistance really has just one message for you: DON’T. It is the most difficult type of resistance to listen to, though, as the noise of the world and monkey-mind chatter often cause us to ignore or overlook it.
So how is this information helpful?
It goes back to last month's topic on self-awareness. The only way that we can shift and grow is if we are aware of our thoughts, what's going on with our physical body, and what has energetically blocked us in the past that is affecting us NOW. Without being able to evaluate what is happening, you can’t detect where the problem lies and the message behind it. You put yourself at risk of making choices that are not aligned with you and that will result in a negative consequences.
So next time you feel some form of resistance pop up, take a moment to reflect, write it down in a journal if you want, and describe the form of resistance and what it is telling you. Now you have a place to start.
